The story of Sam and Elmer starts in 2009, when a Dutch girl called Jolinde comes tot England to work as an au pair for friends in Sam's church. Sam and Jolinde become friends. When Jolinde returns to the Netherlands she invites Sam to visit her.

Later that same year Sam's sister marries and moves with her husband to The Hague. In February 2010 Sam visits Holland for the first time. She enjoys it so much that she returns in April for another visit and spends time with Jolinde.

Having tried many English Christian dating sites and still being single at 31, Jolinde thought it would be fun to sign Sam up for a Funky Fish profile, thinking that it would encourage her to visit Holland more. And it did!

Sam: “After looking through hundreds of profiles on Funky Fish I finally found the profile of Elmer and very innocently thought: ‘God, I would love to marry a guy like that’. Unfortunately I had returned to England by the time Elmer replied to my message on the 16th of April. It was the start of a very long six weeks of emailing, sms messaging and phone calls before I could visit again.

Amazingly Elmer lives only fifteen minutes from my sister in the Hague. We finally met on 3rd of June, where Elmer met me at my sisters’ and we went to a cafe on the Plein. After only two hours of talking non-stop it was obvious we liked each other very much. We had our first kiss by Elmer’s car before he had to leave. That evening I then met him again in Scheveningen at the place where he was playing an acoustic gig, and I was introduced to his two sisters and father. Even on that first evening I think we were both overwhelmed at how we felt already and the craziness of it all.

It was a very short three days before I had to fly back to England. It was a very emotional departure! It then took until the 6th of July before we met again. The time in between was excruciatingly long. We had several emotional Skype sessions, waiting to be together again. During this time I had quit my job and moved out of my rented accommodation with the plan to live with my sister until the end of the summer, so that we could decide how and if our relationship would work.

It is now early November and Elmer and I have barely been apart since we met in July, seeing each other mostly 6 days out of 7! I am now planning to stay in Holland permanently and am currently looking for employment, whilst I continue to live in The Hague with my sister. That is, until Elmer and I finally get to live together forever, following getting married hopefully sometime in 2011.

We both truly believe that we have found our ‘other half’ in each other, that we were made for each other. This truly is a blessing from God. He really does work in the most amazing and sometimes crazy ways! We thank Him constantly, because without His plan we would never have met. How amazing our God is!”
